Aside from myth and legend, another possible explanation for the
prevalence of mermaids in human history is the variety of marine life
that, from a distance or at a glance, could be mistaken for fish-like
people,
in particular seals and manatees.
For example, the famous
explorer Christopher Columbus claimed to have sighted three mermaids–
he noted they were uglier than expected, which is no surprise when you
consider that it’s now commonly believed he actually just spotted some
manatees!

It’s never too early to start sharing
with children about
epilepsy–especially if someone they know might be dealing with its
effects. For families or school teachers,
Purple Day is an ideal time to
have kids wear purple.
But, more than that, it’s a good chance
to dip into fun activities
that give opportunities to share what the day is all about.
Try these
crafts and activities on for size:
Whether it’s called by a nickname such as brolly, canopy, or
parasol,
an umbrella offers protection from the elements of nature.
Most
traditionally, it protects people from getting wet in the rain, but it’s
also useful for protection from the sun as well as a light snowfall.
